Whilst you're certain to learn some new skills on any one of our holidays, these dedicated training courses will teach you the techniques, and help you to develop the skills and the confidence, needed to go walking independently. The courses are generally run on Exmoor or Dartmoor, although we will happily run them other areas such as Snowdonia too, if requested. mountains+moor are a National Navigation Award Scheme provider. If desired, students on our 2-day navigation courses will have the opportunity to be assessed under this scheme. No dates are given as all these courses are run upon request. The prices quoted are per person, for a minimum of two people. Please enquire if you would prefer the benefits of one-to-one tuition. |

These are intensive, non-residential, 2-day courses that are guaranteed to develop and enhance your navigation skills. After a revision of the basics, more advanced navigational techniques will be covered, such as:

Navigation Clinics |
Navigation Clinics are for anyone who wants to develop accurate and efficient map and compass skills. They are equally suitable for complete beginners who want to gain a thorough grounding in the basics, or those who are more experienced but not completely confident in their ability to navigate in poor visibility. Clinics are tailored to match the ability and experience of the participants. We begin with the first principles, and introduce new techniques throughout the day, as the students progress. Previous Experience: None required. |

Summer Mountaincraft |
This practical course is aimed at all who want the confidence to roam freely off the beaten track. All the essential skills of mountain walking will be covered, including: weather, navigation, campcraft, river crossings, use of confidence ropes, dealing with emergencies and mountain hypothermia. By the end of this course you will be a more confident and competent hillwalker, able to look after yourself and your companions. The two-day course takes the form of a mini-expedition, whilst the five-day course begins with three days of instruction, before an expedition to consolidate your new skills. Previous Experience: Some Hillwalking. |

With the emphasis on basic bike-specific navigation skills, by the end of the course you'll feel more confident about tackling remote routes, or perhaps your first Trailquest. Previous Experience: Some experience of off-road cycling and the fitness to be able to ride for about a couple of hours. |

Mountain Bike Navigation (Advanced) |
A more advanced course with the emphasis on competitive bike-specific navigation skills. By the end of the course you'll feel more confident about your next Trailquest. Previous Experience: Perhaps have already competed in a Trailquest or MTBO type of event, and be fit enough to be able to ride for about three hours. |

Rock Climbing |
These introductory sessions are designed for those with little or no climbing experience. The courses will be run outdoors on natural rock (generally on Dartmoor), unless a session on an indoor climbing wall is requested. All technical equipment (e.g.: ropes, harnesses, etc.) will be provided. |

Rock Climbing Techniques |
This
course follows on from the above introduction, and will acquaint you with
some of the movement skills needed to develop an efficient climbing technique.
After a revision of the basics, you will learn how best to deal with rock
features such as slabs, cracks and overhangs. As well as plenty of climbing,
there will be an opportunity to try abseiling too.
Previous Experience: Minimal. Best suited to those who have perhaps climbed a couple of times before. |

Compact Camera - Big Results |
In many ways, compact cameras (both film and digital) are ideal for outdoor activities, but sometimes the results can be disappointing. Generally, the trade off for having a lightweight camera is less control over the picture taking process... ...however, if you understand what the camera is trying to do, there are ways in which you can wrestle control back!
